Have a Pet-Friendly Break Near Bedale close to the A1 as it trundles through north Yorkshire.
Holidays in the market town of Bedale mean good old North Yorkshire hospitality. What’s more, pet-friendly cottages in the area are ideal for a proper family break. Bedale is well situated for seeing the beautiful Yorkshire Dales and Swaledale and Wensleydale in particular. As well as seeing the tourist attractions, you can roam with your dog and really whip up an appetite. For local produce, there is the weekly market on Tuesdays in the cobbled market place.
If your family likes a relaxing day amongst greenery, nearby Thorp Perrow Arboretum, Woodland Garden and Falconry Centre fits the bill. Beautiful trees and shrubs, some of which are rare, are supplemented by a lake and picnic area plus woodland trails and a play area for the kids. Dogs are permitted in the arboretum, if on a lead, but not in the Bird Centre or Mammal Centre. Flying demonstrations take place in the Bird of Prey Centre, where you’ll encounter eagles, owls, vultures and falcons from around the world. The Mammal Centre brings you close to meerkats and wallabies. The Bird of Prey Centre runs various courses of different lengths for anyone interested in learning more and actually working with the falconers and handling the birds.
Dogs are also allowed, on leads, at the Himalayan Garden & Sculpture Park at nearby Grewelthorpe. Twenty acres of woods, valleys and lakes is the backdrop to beautiful floral displays that include rhododendrons and magnolia.
Bedale Museum is housed in Bedale Hall and its treasure trove of exhibits includes wartime artefacts, tools, agricultural implements and displays on cheese and butter making. However, the highlight is a wooden, hand-drawn fire engine from 1748.
