If your taste is for long walks in a pleasing green landscape, dotted with country lanes, dry stone walls and welcoming country pubs, you’re in for a treat when you visit the Yorkshire Dales. It’s also an area known for spectacular show caves and beautiful waterfalls. All this is well and good, but what if you want to take your pet dog with you? No problem!
The Dales are very dog friendly with lots of accommodation owners happy to welcome your much loved pooch. Whether you favour a cottage in a remote area or somewhere close to amenities, you should be able to find something suitable. Many dog owners book accommodation with a secure, enclosed garden, so you don’t have to worry about your pet wandering off. Ask the provider what the surrounding area is like in terms of access for dogs to public footpaths. Wherever you roam with your pet, just follow the rules regarding when you need to put your dog on the lead and when it’s okay to walk them off the lead.
If you have specific requirements for your dog, you can talk to the owner and they will do their very best to meet your needs. If you have more than one dog, some accommodation providers are happy to cater for this. Some holiday homes even have a special area for dogs to get dry after a muddy walk and some provide a nice, warm bed. Coming to the Dales is all about walking the fells and admiring the scenery, no matter what the season. Your dog will enjoy trotting beside you or even racing ahead!
YORKSHIRE THREE PEAKS CHALLENGE

Keen walkers will have heard of the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge. You’ll feel a great sense of achievement, whether you ascend one, two or all three peaks. Dogs are allowed to walk the route with you, as long as they are kept on a lead. Some of the scenery encountered on this walk will leave unforgettable memories.
Recognised for its special attributes, most of the area lies within the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Exploring by car, on foot or by bicycle will no doubt bring you to traditional pubs and charming tea rooms, selling local produce. Often, these establishments will have drinking water at the ready for the weary canine traveller. There is even a pub, located in Hawes, with a plaque on the wall stating, ‘we are a dog friendly pub’. Lots of attractions in the area welcome dogs, although understandably, they are often required to be on a lead. You can also see some amazing countryside and landmarks from a steam train travelling on the famous Settle-Carlisle Railway. Passengers can take up to two dogs and they travel free of charge.
In addition to villages and countryside, you will come across small towns, many of them with markets and a choice of independent shops. Trying the local ale, cheese and home-reared meat is all part of the holiday experience.
