For mountain bike enthusiasts, Yorkshire offers miles of challenging trails. Dalby Forest, in the North York Moors boasts a visitor centre with world-class facilities and trails suitable for both beginners and advanced cyclists. Other popular mountain-biking areas are Otley Chevin Forest Park and Wharncliffe Woods. The Hawes Cycle Route (60 miles) offers recreational cycling along many of the same roads as Le Tour de France Stage 1 .
For the less active, there’s a multitude of things to see and do. Hawes, in Wensleydale, is home to the famous cheese factory and the award winning Dales Countryside Museum. Tadcaster and Selby are interesting small towns, both founded by the Romans and built from the same local limestone that was used for York Minster. Selby Abbey, founded in 1069, with the approval of William the Conqueror, features the 14th century Washington window displaying the family coat of arms.
For those who enjoy larger towns, Harrogate and York should not be missed. Harrogate, with its imposing architecture, boasts a luxurious destination – the Royal Baths. The town is famous for excellent shopping – designer labels, high-end retailers and small independent shops.
Of interest: Victoria Shopping Centre, The famous Betty’s Tea Rooms, Mercer Art Gallery, Anstey Galleries.
York is still a favourite destination, with its famous Minster and ancient city walls. Yorks), Castle Howard (Malton), Fountains Abbey (Ripon), Harlow Carr RHS Garden (near Harrogate), Ripley Castle & Gardens, Bolton Castle (Leyburn), Skipton Castle, North of England Activity Centre, Rufforth, Dinostar (interactive dinosaur museum), Kingston-upon-Hull.

Self catering for small walking groups
A four bedroom selfl-catering cottage may be just what a group of friends planning a walking holiday in Yorkshire is looking for. Taking dogs along makes the whole affair relaxed and homely.
Both the Dales and the Moors provide miles of paths for exhilarating walks with some of the best scenery in England, not forgetting the coast, which borders the North York Moors National Park and offers thirty miles of coastal paths. You can pick up information on guided walks from any of the designated Visitor Centres.
A holiday cottage with four bedrooms will usually sleep 8 people. It is crucial to check the beds provided because there are holiday cottages with all double beds that would suit couples only and that might not do at all for a group of eight single people.
